Entry door replacement, Duncan to Qualicum Beach
Daylight around the edges, a threshold that leaks, a door that swells shut in November and rattles in March. We replace the whole unit, door, frame and threshold, so it closes with one hand and seals when it does.
Why the old door leaks
Most entry doors on mid-Island homes from the 1970s to 90s are a wood or hollow steel slab hung in a wood frame, with a weather-strip that was replaced once and a threshold that has been painted over. Houses move, frames go out of square, wood swells with six months of damp, and the gaps open. You feel it at your ankles in the hallway, and you pay for it every month the furnace or heat pump runs.
What we install
Insulated fibreglass doors
A foam core inside a fibreglass skin. Doesn't dent, doesn't rust, doesn't swell, and takes a smooth or wood-grain finish. The right door for an entry that takes weather head-on.
Insulated steel doors
The same foam core in a steel skin. Strong, secure and the lower price. Suits a covered or sheltered entry, and a side or garage-to-house door.
Sidelites, transoms and glass
Glass panels beside or above the door bring light into a dark hallway. The glass is sealed, Low-E insulated glass, the same standard as the windows, so the light doesn't come with a cold spot.
Every door is pre-hung in its own frame with a new adjustable threshold, compression weather-strip and a multi-point or deadbolt lock, sized to your rough opening. [ENTRY DOOR SUPPLIER]
What we check at the measure
- The sill and the framing under the threshold, with a moisture probe. This is where entry doors rot, and it's hidden until the door comes out
- Rough opening size and how far out of square the old frame sits
- Swing direction and handing, and whether a storm door is staying
- Exposure: how much weather the entry takes, which decides fibreglass or steel
- The step and threshold height, for a clean transition and a seal that holds
Each door goes on its own line in your quote with its energy rating and whether it qualifies for the Home Renovation Rebate. Most people do the entry door in the same visit as the patio door and the windows.
FAQ
Common questions
How much does it cost to replace an entry door?
A single insulated door in a standard opening is the lower end. Sidelites, a transom, a double door, or a rotted frame and sill that need rebuilding move it up. We price it line by line after the free measure, and the online estimate gives you a ballpark within one business day if you send the opening size first.
Fibreglass or steel?
Both are insulated and both seal far better than an old wood or hollow door. Fibreglass takes a wood-grain finish, doesn't dent and doesn't rust, and handles coastal weather on an exposed entry. Steel is the lower price, strong, and fine under a covered porch. We'll tell you which suits your entry.
Do you replace just the slab or the whole frame?
Usually the whole unit: door, frame, threshold and weather-strip, pre-hung so it seals as designed. Swapping only the slab into an old, out-of-square frame is why so many replacement doors still leak air. If your frame is sound and square, we'll say so.
Do entry doors qualify for the BC rebate?
Program-qualified exterior doors count toward the Home Renovation Rebate on the same terms as windows. We confirm which doors on your quote qualify before you order; you submit the claim.
How long does an entry door take?
Most are done in a few hours, the same day, and your house is never left without a locking door. Rot repair at the sill adds time, and you'll know about it from the measure.
